What is the purpose of preserving traditions?

18 comments:

  1. Tradition is an important contributor to society as a whole. After the presentation, I really thought about all the things both sides of my family do every year and would be considered a tradition. The memories and meaning behind tradition can be very special to someone, a family, a community, a country, etc. The purpose of preserving tradition is to have something to believe in, represent morals, and share this tradition to others. My family traditions are very important to me. Some traditions might be modified as the years move along, but the foundation of the tradition is still represented. Without tradition, new things would not have been created. I hope to still incorporate my traditions and create new ones along the way.

A tradition can be defined as how a group or communities of individuals hand down patterns of customs with regard to their behavior and beliefs. Traditions are usually created by a group of individuals who share something in common; whether it may be their ethnicity, race, religion, or values. People begin to name a specific action as a tradition as it continues to be practiced from generation to generation. It is important to preserve traditions, so that these traditions are not lost as the individuals who practice them pass away, or settle in another community. When traditions are preserved, more people are aware of the behaviors and history that took place before them. For example, as the Sicilian natives brought along their traditional celebration of St. Joseph Altars Day to America, specifically southeastern Louisiana, their American generations became informed of the horrible famine that took place in their elder relatives’ native. Preserving traditions can also bring customs from one country to another. These Sicilians natives continued to spread the word of their celebration that now even Americans with no Sicilian background celebrate St. Joseph Altars Day. When we preserve traditions, some historical events, such as the famine in Sicily, don’t even have to be written down. As these traditions continue to be practiced from generation to generation, the people who practice them will be the ones continuing the history of the ancestors. They will know why they are celebrating this feast day and they will tell their children and grandchildren also.

  4. A tradition is a long-established action or pattern of behavior in a community or group of people, often one that has been handed down from generation to generation. This can be celebrating Christmas or Thanksgiving. An example of a preserved tradition would have to be a best man at a wedding. The best man is a male friend or relative chosen by a bridegroom to assist him at his wedding. The best man is chosen by groom because he is the only person besides his wife that has stood by his side in a time of need. This is a tradition that has been around for years and hasn’t changed. This is an example of a preserved tradition. The United States of America is riddled with people from different countries preserving their own traditions. We preserve a variety of traditions based on the area or city that you are in. When someone goes out with their family to a Mexican restaurant and order something of the menu, the people they are ordering from are preserving their own traditions in the form of a meal. The Mexican food that they are eating is only found at the Mexicans that run the restaurant. Traditions reinforce a social aspect which allows all people of a particular society to follow some rules so that they can have a stable place in society. In the event that a tradition dies, the time and work they put into preserving that tradition also dies. The Saint Joseph Day Alter is a tradition that originated all the way from Sicily and we, the students of Xavier, are doing our best to preserve that tradition. That is why we are making the Alter, to preserve a tradition that has been here since before I was born or before my parents were born.

A tradition is the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation. Having traditions within families is important. It is was separates one family from another and what shows the uniqueness of a family. Though having traditions is important, preserving traditions is what is most important. There are many purposes as to why one should preserve traditions. The firs purpose is to remember. Remembering is a big aspect of preserving tradition. In order for traditions to continue people must remember the history and background of their specific history. Another purpose of preserving traditions is unity. As we preserve traditions throughout our families it helps unite us and helps bring us together. With a family tradition it is important to keep the tradition going. The most important purpose of preserving traditions is continuation. Without the continuation of a tradition, the tradition can completely be erased from one’s family and culture. It is important that each member passes on the tradition and adds some type of tradition to there family so that traditions can pass on from generation to generation. Traditions are long-established customs or belief that have been passed on. In order to keep a tradition you must preserve it.

Merriam -Webster Dictionary defines traditions as the handing down of information, beliefs, and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another without written instruction. I highly agree with this definition. Tradition depicts and illustrates who many of us and our families are and who/what we represent. It is important that we preserve our family traditions and cultures. The loss of family traditions can be so tragic. Once family traditions are lost, we as members of the family fail to respect, remember, and cherish what our ancestors have fought for. I personally know that without my ancestors I would not be who I am or where I am today. It would be quite selfish of me to ignore the sacrifices they have made for me and many generations to come after me. One tradition that my family place enfaces on is our story time; a members from each generation are to reflect on some practices and moments they cherish from a special time in their life. We then get explanations from the elderly of the family as to how and why those practices were created. This allows us all to understand why it is important to appreciate what our ancestors have done. I can personally recall some of my family’s traditions that have faded away, but myself and many of my family members are working together to bring them back into practice.

  7. A tradition is handing down beliefs, legends, customs, and information from generation to generation. Traditions are usually created from people who have things in common, such as morals and values. I personally think that traditions in a family represent us as a whole and distinguish us from other families. Typically when we first hear the word tradition, we think of family traditions but communities, businesses, and etc have traditions too. For example, New Orleans has its tradition of Mardi Gras parades, which they have annually. Everybody comes together to watch the bands and dancers perform, also to get beads and Zulu balls. Preserving traditions are important because it’s not good to let a tradition end because of the ones who created them are deceased. Allowing a tradition to end is somewhat being selfish and lazy because it’s not caring for the reason why your ancestors created the tradition and not wanting to hand it down to the next generation created more memories and uniting. Knowing the history and the purpose of a tradition motivates people to keep traditions preserved. Keeping the tradition preserved brings people together and makes good memories. It also allows us to appreciate and understand why our ancestors started the tradition. The purpose of having a tradition is to share the tradition to others, pass it to the next generation, to have something to believe in, and know some history about your family or the event that started the tradition. As the world continues traditions may change or be modified a little but nine times out of ten it will be the same like it was in the past. Having a tradition in your family that is preserved is somewhat of having a legend in your family, because every year you get to tell you family and friends what happen that previous year in that tradition.

A tradition is something that people do over and over because it has meaning to them. It is so important to preserve traditions, because it gives you your identity. Usually, people’s traditions deal with their culture. To give up the traditions is similar to giving up your culture. Also, preserving traditions is important because it gives life a larger meaning. When you have a tradition, you are more connected to everything around you. This connection is better than to live life without a point. Traditions bring people together, too. It gives a sense of unity to a family, friends, or community. These traditions make you a part of your community. It, also, benefits you and everyone participating in this tradition. Studies show that emotions improve by being part of a group. It makes sense, because human are sociable creatures. We need one another to survive. For example, when we are on vacation in foreign place, we rarely go alone. Traditions are, also, great because you are contributing to something larger than yourself. It is good to think and act for others. There is so much history behind a tradition. You can see how much work was put into keeping it alive. A good example of a tradition would be the St. Joseph’s Day Altars. These altars were constructed in honor of St. Joseph for helping the Sicilians through a hard drought. The altars are still constructed today, but instead of praying to St. Joseph for food, people pray to St. Joseph for the safety of their loved ones. It shows how traditions can change over time, but still have a similar purpose and meaning. Moreover, traditions are important because they link us with our ancestors and remind us of who we are and where we came from. They help us define who we and our children are going to be. They are a link between the past, present and future.

The purpose of preserving tradition is to keep a hold on to something that is important to a person or group of people with the hope of having it be passed down to future generations. When a person starts a new tradition within their family, they plan on continuing doing that routine for as long as possible. Traditions can vary depending on the person. Some traditions may be having a family party on every forth Sunday or watching a person's hometown football team's game. We develop these traditions over time and sometimes pass them on to our loved ones. In order for the passing of traditions to be successful, the creator of that tradition must know that the person in which they are relying on to continue this tradition is completely for that tradition. Overall, many traditions come from a variety of different reasons and made with the intent of being celebrated for as long as possible. It is important for a person to keep a tradition alive so that those who belong to a different generation than that of the actual creator or creators of the tradition will know what was important to their elders.

Traditions hold many people very close together. It can be defined as the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation. They are important because that is how a culture is developed-through traditions. The purpose of tradition is to pass on useful knowledge. All that we know today about ourselves and the world we live in is through the traditions formulated throughout the ages by different civilizations. Thus we see a variety of traditions existent in the world today. These vary from social traditions, to cultural, religious, educational, spiritual, economic, as well as traditions in warfare.
My family holds different traditions, and most of the time it’s during the holidays. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, we have a family dinner. This goes for both sides of the family for Christmas. We exchange gifts as most people do. During Mardi Gras season we always get multiple king cakes and go to parades as a family. During New Year’s we always eat a meal of cabbage and black eyed-peas for good luck and wealth. Each birthday we get our favorite cake and ice cream and presents from our family and siblings.
It is important to preserve these traditions especially for the future. Our kids will do the same things we do, because we did the same things that our parents do as well. The future depends on tradition or else human kind will go back to being cavemen with no humanity whatsoever. Tradition keeps the society enriched with many different aspects, which we all need to hold us together as one society celebrating together.

Preserving traditions is something important that should be done over and over. Usually traditions would start from an older generation then would be passed down to the next generation and so on. Traditions are sometimes supposed to be meaningful because it can be something that isn’t done often. It can be something that is usually done once a year or it can be done at different times depending on the tradition itself. One example of traditions that happen every year is celebrating one’s birthday which is celebrating a new age of a person. People can have traditions on holidays which occur every year such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Preparing a dinner on these holidays can be a family tradition that has been going on for years. One tradition that I have is every year my family would pray for the souls of family members that passed away to keep them in memory. Another example of a tradition that happens every year is the St. Joseph Alter. Every year there is an alter made for St. Joseph and decorated food is put on this alter. This tradition is held in memory of St. Joseph.

A tradition is the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, or information from generation to generation. Tradition is important because it is a part of an individual, family, and culture. Tradition is what keeps the culture alive and going. Preserving traditions is knowing who one is as a person and where they are originally from. Traditions also bring people together. Some examples of a tradition can be holiday celebrations, the food that you eat, or clothes that you specifically wear on certain occasions. They are passed down from generation to generation and very valuable in a household or overall family. In my home and community, a tradition that we celebrate yearly is Chinese New Years. Traditions really do bring people together because they all have some sort of connection.

  13. The purpose of preserving tradition is very important. We preserve tradition so that we may pass it on for generations to come. If we do not preserve tradition, we will lose many valuable aspect of certain things. Traditions have the ability to keep families together, bring them closer, and introduce a friend to a family. I know that my family has many traditions that we partake in that keep us close together. Many of my friends have also taken part in these family traditions and that has brought us closer as friends. Each Mother's Day my family goes to the North Shore and have a traditional Mother's Day picnic. This is only on my mother's side. This always seems to bring that side of the family closer together.

  14. A tradition is the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. A tradition has to be preserved for the generations of the future. They must continue their family’s traditions because the traditions hold their family’s identity and history. In some cases, these traditions have become the backbone of the ethnic group, the organization or even that is being celebrated or observed. It has become an institution of sorts and has inevitably become an irreplaceable aspect of the concerned event. Human culture and traditions are subject to change as they are passed down the generations. However, I think the point you’re trying to make is why old traditions should be respected in this modern, high tech age. Some traditions that are inhumane, discriminatory or environmentally damaging should be allowed to die out, but many traditional arts and craft, folk tales and histories, environmental protection and survival techniques should be preserved as a valued aspect of human development as a link to our past and as the pointer to our future. The preservation of knowledge is never a waste. Since all traditions contain some type of knowledge we should pass them down so that our younger generations can use this knowledge for the future. Traditions are the key to keeping family history alive.

Tradition is a very important aspect in every individual's life. Not only does it define you as a person and shape who you are, but it also brings people together. I think tradition is any activity, event, or custom that a person takes part in which makes them one of a kind. Preserving tradition is important because tradition has a special meaning to each and every one of us in different ways. We want to spread this importance down to later generations and to never let it die. If we don't preserve tradition, who knows what might happen. You could lose your individuality and you may forget why this tradition was important to your parents, grandparents, and so on. A common tradition that people celebrate is Christmas. This is a tradition which helps Christians remember about the birth of Jesus and how much he has done for them. If this tradition were to die, the world wouldn't be the same. Tradition also plays an important role in remembering something. For example, if a loved one dies, you don't want that loved one to be forgotten. Therefore, a common tradition is to visit at least once a year and give them flowers and other items of importance. Another important aspect of tradition is history. Tradition lets us remember how our ancestors used to do things. Without tradition, everything would be forgotten and we will lose a chunk of our individuality. Finally, tradition brings people together. During Christmas, families travel across the country just to reunite with their relatives and celebrate the special occasion with the people they love. Without tradition, this wouldn't be possible because people would always be far apart and everyone will forget each other. Tradition is too important to not be preserved, in my opinion.

The purpose of preserving traditions is to keep cultures, beliefs, and customs alive over time and throughout generations. People use traditions as a means of bringing themselves together while keeping in touch with their roots by means of their ancestors. The preservation of traditions also honors and shows great respect to those who have come before you. Sometimes tradition is the only thing a group of people may have. For example, immigrants bring their traditions to new countries to make themselves feel at home in a new place and express their uniqueness as a community. Similarly, after the emancipation of slaves, many tried to salvage whatever they could of the little traditions their parents had to sneak to teach them. Many expressions of culture were strictly forbidden for slaves. Other slaves who attained freedom decided to develop their own traditions and customs to pass to future generations. Many people’s traditions are directly linked and related to holidays and seasons. Some examples include Christmas, Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Yom Kippur, and New Year’s Eve. In many cases, the older the tradition the stronger it may be. Strong traditions work to keep people together and can also make members of a certain community feel special and appreciated. This appreciation is often replicated for one’s culture and ancestry. FInally, preserving traditions also is a great means of raising the young. Traditions are a great way to implement morals and a sense of right and wrong in those you are young.

  18. Tradition is a culture ritual that has strong meaning that is passed down from generation to generation. Several people realize that traditions are important because it is what their past people or ancestors did before their time. Traditions show that they people who are living in the present respect their forefathers by carrying on their cultural rituals. Many people have different traditions that have a variety of meanings. Tradition is something that people will value for many years because they usually have strong meaning. Many of these traditions have been around for many centuries or have been recently created and will be passed down from generation to generation. Tradition is something that has been in families for several years. Some people believe that different traditions will have a positive effect on their lives and their families for generations. Traditions are basically the foundation for the family and their beliefs. Traditions should be preserved because they represent the beliefs and customs of the family. Traditions is a sole part of a family and what makes them come together like Sunday dinners, Thanksgiving dinners, and Christmas dinners. Some traditions can not only be annually but they can be daily or monthly. Traditions can hold family together when strife comes into their lives. These traditions can also be used to express the feelings of the family and love ones that they have each other. Many families come together and they decide to perform traditional rituals that are their way of representing their family past. The preservation of traditions can also teach young people the values of family and their past generations. Tradition is something that is needed in order to hold the families together and that is missing form most families. My family truly values traditions and we have decided to continue to do many traditions for many years to come.
